There's actually a science to placing control joints correctly. Get it wrong, and you'll still have random cracks. Here are the rules professionals follow:

Control joints should be spaced 24-30 times the slab thickness in feet. For a 4-inch thick slab, this means joints every 8-10 feet. For a 5-inch slab, space joints every 10-12 feet.

Joints must be cut to a depth of 1/4 of the slab thickness. For a 4-inch slab, this means cutting 1 inch deep. Too shallow and the joint won't work.

Square Panels

Plan joint layout to create approximately square panels. Avoid long, narrow panels which are more prone to cracking between joints.
